How We Test
Our testing translates technical specs into real sleep outcomes. Each score combines lab protocols with field validation so you can quickly see if a tent fits your group, your climate, and your carry limits.
Fit-First: True Capacity Index (TCI)
We map actual sleeping layouts using common pad sizes (regular/wide, rectangular/mummy) and typical pillow/foot clearance. TCI reflects how many people and pets fit without edge compression or zipper interference, including realistic elbow and shoulder room.
- Floor mapping: We overlay pad templates and note door/vestibule conflicts.
- Headroom mapping: We measure seated height zones (e.g., 90 cm/100 cm/110+ cm) to show where adults can sit upright or change.
- Storage flow: We evaluate vestibule volume, door swing, and pocket layout for clean gear paths and pet containment.
Space-to-Weight Ratio (S2W)
We calculate interior usable volume and vestibule utility per carried weight. For backpacking models, S2W is a core input; for car-camping models, we factor pack size and setup simplicity more heavily.
Pitch-Time & Setup Complexity
We time first-pitch (from bag to taut) in calm daylight, steady rain, and headlamp-only conditions. We score:
- Steps and color-coding logic
- Freestanding vs. stake dependence
- Guyline ergonomics and snag risk
- Error tolerance (mis-threaded poles, reversed fly)
Weather & Ventilation
- Rain: Controlled hose and natural rainfall with drip-point tracing around doors, vents, and seam lines.
- Wind: Guy-out patterns, pole flex, and stake hold with documented thresholds.
- Condensation: Cross-vent paths, mesh-to-fly clearance, and adjustable vent performance across temperature/humidity ranges.
Durability & Repairability
We inspect fabrics, coatings, pole alloys, hub junctions, zippers, and guy points. Repairability scoring considers part availability, modularity (shock-cord, pole segments), and ease of common fixes (zippers, patches, pole splints). We provide post-purchase care guides and parts sourcing where possible.
Scoring & Weights by Use Case
Weights shift by intent:
- Ultralight miles: S2W and packed size matter most; storm-readiness must meet route expectations.
- Family camping: TCI, door/vestibule logic, and quick pitch weigh heavier.
- Winter/shoulder: Structure, guying options, and condensation control lead. We publish category-specific weights in each guide for transparency.
Evidence & Repeatability
We share test photos, pad-layout diagrams, and timing logs. If a finding can’t be reproduced by another tester following our steps, it doesn’t make the final score.
Limitations
No test can simulate every microclimate. We disclose when a result is lab-only or field-verified and note gear revisions that may alter outcomes. Our goal is clarity about confidence, not certainty.
