Independence & Ethics
We do not accept paid placements for rankings or reviews. Our recommendations are driven by test data and real-world use. If we receive a sample, it is accepted with no guarantee of coverage or a positive outcome. Loaners are returned when requested; if retained, we disclose the status.
Product Selection
We consider popularity, availability, category coverage (family, ultralight, four-season, festival), and reader requests. We also include legacy models still widely owned to support post-purchase guidance.
Our Review Process
- Spec translation: We convert dimensions and materials into human outcomes (fit, headroom, ventilation, durability).
- Lab protocols: True Capacity Index (pad layouts), Space-to-Weight ratio, Pitch-Time tests, and Repairability scoring.
- Field cycles: Multi-night trips across weather ranges; headlamp-only setup tests; kid/pet logistics.
- Scoring & ranking: Weighted by use case (e.g., storm-worthiness is heavier for shoulder/winter tents). We disclose weights in our How We Test page.
Sources & Citations
When we reference standards, materials science, or manufacturer claims, we cite the source and link to original documents where possible.
Corrections & Updates
If we discover an error, we correct it promptly and add a note describing what changed and why. Products are periodically re-tested or re-scored as designs update or as we gather longer-term durability data.
Conflicts of Interest
Editors and testers do not hold financial interests in brands they cover. Gifts of significant value are declined. Travel or events sponsored by brands are disclosed and do not guarantee coverage.

Use of AI Tools
